I lived in the silence
Advocate María Hreiðarsdóttir (1970–2022) published her autobiography, Ég lifði í þögninni (I Lived in Silence), in 2017. Þroskahjálp (Iceland's National Association of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) has now put the book back on sale following María's passing, with all proceeds going to María's son, Ottó Bjarki.
In the book, María describes, among other things, her various causes; she served as chairperson of Átak, an association for people with intellectual disabilities, where she fought vigorously for rights that non-disabled people take for granted, such as the right to start a family, the right to maintain one's fertility, and the right to earn a decent wage for one's work.
Guðrún V. Stefánsdóttir chronicled the life story together with María.
It is also possible to choose to support María's son without having the book sent by selecting 'Support' from the drop-down menu.
Copies should be collected at the Þroskahjálp office at Suðurlandsbraut 18, 3rd floor. Please contact the office if you wish to have the book sent by mail.
